Explore the Watershed
Comprised of the area of land where all water drains into the Norwalk River, the watershed spans 40,000 acres across seven towns - Norwalk, Wilton, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Redding, Weston, CT and Lewisboro, NY.It provides public drinking water, handles three wastewater treatment plants, offers hiking trails and recreational fishing, and feeds some of Connecticut’s most important oyster beds at its mouth in Long Island Sound!
Twenty miles of river and 40,000 acres of surrounding land across 7 towns support recreational fishing, dozens of miles of hiking trails, abundant wildlife, and drinking water for over 130,000 people.
Our trail map includes the current and future Norwalk River Valley Trail system as well as trails throughout the watershed and surrounding vicinity. In Redding, New Canaan, Lewisboro, Ridgefield, Wilton, Weston and Norwalk (and Darien next door) we helped plant native trees and shrubs along hiking trails and in parks and open space. We've planted acres of vegetated buffer along rivers, streams, and wetlands.
The History of Mills and Dams Along the Norwalk River arranged by Brent M. Colley. Histories of Mills and Dams coming from Wilbur F. Thompson articles written between 1915 and 1930, later made available by Irene Baldwin in 1965. Additional photos, maps and information to enhance the Thompson material were added in 2005.
