This community was called Pimpewaug well into the 19th century, but a popular store owned by John Cannon since the late 1780's led to the term Cannon's or Cannon Crossing. The place now has a cluster of art and antique shops, a railway station, a grange, and a one-room schoolhouse (now a restaurant), all adjacent to Gregory's grist mill.

The grist mill was built around 1900. It reportedly had to wait until 10 AM every day to start work since it relied on the water that was released by the Gilbert and Bennett factory up in Georgetown. That water took three hours to get down to Cannondale. Near this spot, two small brooks join the Norwalk River: Goetzen Brook from the west, and Mayapple Brook from the east.
