Copts Brook

BACK to the Norwalk River.

Copts Brook starts at Dudley Pond, at Winston Lane, north of Westport Road (Route 33) in southeastern Wilton. It flows through Wilton's "Great Swamp" (on both sides of Route 33 at Dudley Road and Clover Drive), then through Clover Pond in Wilton Acres, and it finally empties into the Norwalk River at the Wilton/Norwalk line.

The name "Copts Brook" (shown on the current topographic maps) is a corruption of "Capt.'s" or "Captains" Brook, referring to Captain Olmstead, who was given land in this area for his service in King Philip's War. The brook is sometimes called "Copps Brook", risking confusion with another early resident, after whom Copp's Plaza (in Ridgefield) is named.
